Iain Nicolson Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary

The Iain Nicolson Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary underwent a 6,440 SF renovation and a 4,420 SF addition to increase daily visitor capacity. Over the past 20 years, the center has grown from hosting a few hundred visitors a day to welcoming more than 35,000 during crane season. When originally built, the Visitors Center was one of the largest straw bale buildings in the country, a technique unique to Nebraska. The new east and west wings build on this legacy by extending the closed-loop geothermal system, which helps regulate indoor temperatures efficiently. High-efficiency windows reduce heat absorption while providing stunning views of the Platte River, and a system of vertical hanging cords minimizes bird collisions.

Additionally, an 86-panel solar array now generates an estimated 48,000 kWh annually, demonstrating the efficiency of renewable energy. Native plant landscaping reduces water use, supports pollinators, and strengthens soil stability. Construction was carefully managed to minimize disruptions to wildlife, and the center remained open throughout the project. By combining time-tested and innovative sustainable strategies, the renovations enhance both the visitor experience and the sanctuary’s ecological mission. Our team collaborated closely with the center’s representatives to ensure a smooth process.
