St. James Dedication Ceremony

St. James Catholic Church, located in Kearney, Nebraska, held a rite of dedication for the church and its altar at 3 p.m. on Sunday. This liturgy follows the ancient custom of setting aside a building for the permanent use of the people of God in their sacred acts of worship. Grand Island Diocese Bishop Joseph G. Hanefeld presided the Eucharistic celebration that lasted nearly three hours. The renovation of the church added seating in the sanctuary for 750 people. Office space was expanded and there is now an exposed, glassed-in courtyard to create a welcoming atmosphere.
