The Carmel of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

The Carmelite Monastery is a 40,000 SF Spanish Mission style monastery that houses 20 Cloistered Catholic Nuns located in Agnew, Nebraska. There are four open courtyards within the building footprint and a two-story chapel. A bell tower is located on the far west side of the monastery. Bruno Salvatori, from Italy, completed an incredible, six million piece, glass mosaic in the dome of the chapel.

The altar was donated by Tom and Rhonda Peed, who acquired the altar in an auction and had stored it in their farm house for over 30 years. Rev. Charles Van Vliet enlisted the help of several seminarians to help organize and clean the hundreds of pieces of marble. The marble pieces had to be scrubbed and polished before being brought to the monastery to be assembled. The hand-carved, solid marble altar was assembled piece by piece.
