Trailside Academy PK-8

The Trailside Academy PK-8 school is categorized as an “Urban” + “Art” school which specifies an Expeditionary Learning Style. The building flows from east to west, starting with Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and a special needs area, then flows through a colorful and inviting corridor housing 1st through 4th grades, with multiple group activity areas and an art room. The building opens to a large glass wall serving as a separation to the music room and a bright and colorful commons area accented by structural glulam beams above leading into the cafeteria which is equipped with a stand-alone kitchen. The use of wood windows throughout the building contributes to a substantial amount of natural lighting. Grades 5 - 8 are located on the second floor, which overlooks the main floor and is accessed by open staircases, reinforcing the open concept of the building.

The building design features a unique curving exterior wall outfitted with several storefront windows and doors waving like a natural trail - a nod to the school’s name, Trailside Academy. The interior of the building will feature many of the high quality and programmatic features the District requested, to include exposed glulam beams, skylights polished concrete floors, tall vertical windows and a permanent preschool wing. The north façade is composed of decorative masonry and color tinted glass.
