Journey Elementary School

The new Journey Elementary consists of 25 classrooms, a library, art, music and food service areas. Special features of the new school include a grand staircase as a means of access between floors as well as an area to hold assemblies, a half-court gymnasium next to the music/theatre stage and a library “reading nook” with a cavern theme made from overlaying custom-shaped birch plywood. A “water works” area provides the opportunity to learn about water diversion, pumping water and so forth.

The gymnasium incorporates a dividing curtain and wrap-around benches for audience seating during indoor events. Exterior site components consist of two parking lots - one on either end of the building, a playground equipped primarily with equipment relocated from a school across town and an interactive greenhouse. The exterior finishes for the greenhouse are brick, block and siding. Alternating sizes of siding were used to create a unique pattern. Three different colors of windows also alternate to create a fun building aesthetic which will lead toward shaping thousands of children’s lives for years to come.
