Underwriters Laboratories Office Building

The Underwriters Laboratories (UL) office building was designed and built as a flexible and open office space. The building features a lobby with a well-equipped kitchen and an adjacent outdoor patio space with an outdoor grill.

Restrooms also include showers for employees who bike to work. The office space has an open floor plan to allow teams to collaborate easily. Three main ‘scrum rooms’ allow for private conferencing and brainstorming and two smaller pod rooms are available for intimate meetings and phone calls. The second floor features a wide-open conference space that overlooks the lobby.

The open conference room also has a mini bar and kitchen designed for catering to conference groups. Exterior materials were selected to fit into the landscape and display modern building technologies, including horizontal metal panels, brick and stone, large aluminum framed windows and a combination of roof slopes and types. The passive solar design of the roof overhangs and sunshades allow the building to gain energy from the sun during the winter and shade the windows during the summer. Many rooms feature daylighting windows so a minimal amount of artificial lighting will be needed during office hours. The entry is positioned to shield it from the prevailing westerly winds.
