Early Learning Center at Skinner

Early Learning Center at Skinner is a research-based program supported by the Buffett Early Childhood Fund. This fund provides year-round, high-quality early childhood programming, preparing low-income infants and toddlers for pre-K and kindergarten. The 26,000 SF facility is equipped with a commercial kitchen, storm shelter, 12 classrooms for 0-3 year olds, four flexible classrooms and areas for administration, interior play, multipurpose play, observation, consultation and teacher lounge/resource.

Some unique building features include the clerestory corridors and aluminum windows that begin 8” above the floor so children can see out. Around the building are 10’ deep soffits to provide shade and allow a dry play space if there's rain, flexible playground areas with multiple play and landscaping features and a mechanical system with a cooling tower and multiple heat pumps to allow for climate control of each individual classroom. The project was designed and bid in several bid packages to allow for early demolition, civil, structural and MEP work to progress ahead of the finishes in the final design package.
